Solar panels in Luxembourg: are they worth it for your home?

Tool 1: how much your roof would produce and earn each year. Tool 2: how many years until the system pays for itself, with the 2026 Klimabonus or with the 15-year guaranteed feed-in tariff, and which of the two suits you. Everything is computed in your browser from official sources: yield from PVGIS, subsidies from guichet.lu, ILR grid tariffs, the grand-ducal regulation on feed-in tariffs. Benchmark: 37,978 installations are already connected in Luxembourg (19 October 2026).

Tool 1How much will you produce and earn each year?

kWh/year · €/year

Describe your roof and your consumption: the yield comes from the PVGIS database of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (SARAH3 irradiation, 2005-2023, 14% system losses), computed for Luxembourg City and corrected by canton. The self-consumed share is estimated from the production/consumption ratio; you can override it.

Your roof
1 kWp ≈ 2 to 3 panels ≈ 5 m² of roof. A house most often has 3 to 10 kWp; the Klimabonus requires at least 2 kWp.
Largest gap between cantons: about 5% (Clervaux, Wiltz in the north; Esch, Capellen in the south).
Your consumption
3,900 kWh: the average household used by the Ministry of the Economy; about 13,000 kWh with a heat pump and an electric car.
Usable capacity in kWh. The Klimabonus subsidises it from 2 kWh.
Without a battery, a household typically self-consumes 30% when production equals consumption; the share falls as the system grows and rises with a battery.

payback time · net gain over 25 years

The tool takes the production from tool 1 and compares the two schemes open to households in 2026: option A, Klimabonus (deducted from the invoice) with self-consumption and surplus sold at market price; option B, no subsidy but surplus paid at the guaranteed feed-in tariff for 15 years. The two cannot be combined: claiming the Klimabonus means waiving the guaranteed tariff.

Table 2. Yield by orientation and pitch

kWh per kWp per year in Luxembourg City, PVGIS SARAH3 2005-2023, 14% system losses. The optimum is due south at 35°; an east-west roof produces about 20% less, a vertical façade 30 to 50% less.

Table 4. Klimabonus 2026 and guaranteed feed-in tariff

Klimabonus (guichet.lu): P × (1,155 − 33 × P) € for a power P below 15 kWp, €10,000 from 15 kWp; battery Q × (500 − 500/18 × Q) €, €2,250 from 9 kWh. Guaranteed tariff (amended grand-ducal regulation of 1 August 2014, art. 17ter): 165 × 0.97n−2019 €/MWh up to 10 kW, 155 × 0.97n−2019 above that and up to 30 kW, n being the year of first feed-in.

Frequently asked questionsWhat people in Luxembourg ask before installing

How much does 1 kWp of solar panels produce in Luxembourg?

About 1,070 kWh a year for a due-south roof pitched at 35° in Luxembourg City (PVGIS, 2005-2023 average, 14% system losses), 1,010 kWh for a south-east or south-west roof, 860 kWh for an east or west roof. The north of the country (Clervaux, Wiltz) produces 3% less, the south (Esch, Capellen) 2% more. A 6 kWp system therefore produces 5,500 to 6,400 kWh a year, 1.4 to 1.6 times the consumption of an average household (3,900 kWh).

How much is the Klimabonus for solar PV in 2026?

For a self-consumption system of power P (in kWp, at least 2), the subsidy is P × (1,155 − 33 × P) euros below 15 kWp and 10,000 euros from 15 kWp: €3,168 for 3 kWp, €5,742 for 6 kWp, €8,250 for 10 kWp. A battery of capacity Q (kWh) adds Q × (500 − 500/18 × Q) euros, €2,250 from 9 kWh. The subsidy is deducted from the invoice by the installer (pre-financing) for invoices dated 4 January 2026 to 31 December 2029. Condition: waive any guaranteed remuneration for the electricity fed in.

Klimabonus or guaranteed feed-in tariff: which to choose?

The two cannot be combined. The Klimabonus cuts the upfront investment and suits small or medium systems that self-consume a good share of their output. The guaranteed tariff (13.3 c€/kWh for a first feed-in in 2026, 12.9 c€ in 2027, for 15 years, up to 10 kW) pays better for the surplus and becomes competitive when the system is large relative to consumption. Tool 2 computes both for your case; as a rule, the more you feed in, the closer option B gets to option A.

How much does a solar PV system cost in Luxembourg?

2026 quotes seen from installers range from €1,600 to €2,200 per kWp installed for 6 to 15 kWp, i.e. €10,000 to €13,000 for 6 kWp, VAT included. Supply and installation on a dwelling qualifies for the super-reduced VAT rate of 3%. After the Klimabonus, a 6 kWp system costs about €4,500 to €7,500.

What is a self-consumed kWh worth?

Only the variable components of the bill are avoided: energy (about 13 c€/kWh in 2026), the grid's volumetric charge (5.10 c€), the compensation mechanism (−3.71 c€ in 2026, thanks to the State's €150 million contribution), the electricity tax (0.10 c€), all subject to 8% VAT: about 16 c€/kWh in 2026, and close to 20 c€ if the State contribution ends. Fixed charges (metering, reference power) remain due. Counting 25 c€ because "my bill divided by my kWh gives 25 cents" overstates the gain.

Do you need a battery?

A battery lifts the self-consumed share from about 30% to 50-60% for a typical house, but costs €700 to €1,100 per kWh installed, part of which the Klimabonus refunds (up to €2,250). With a surplus sold at 5 c€ and an avoided kWh worth 20 c€, each stored kWh earns 15 c€: a 7 kWh battery cycled 250 times a year earns about €260 a year for €4,000 to €6,000 of net investment. It therefore usually lengthens the payback time; tool 2 shows it for your case.

Is the income from a solar PV system taxable?

For a private individual operating a system of 1 to 30 kWp, the direct tax administration accepts, as a matter of tolerance, that it is a hobby activity not counted in taxable income (circular L.I.R. no. 14/2 of 5 June 2023, summarised by Klima-Agence). With pure self-consumption there is no commercial activity at all.

How do I check my roof's potential?

The national solar cadastre (energie.geoportail.lu) rates every roof in the country by its potential; Klima-Agence offers free, neutral advice. For a fine estimate, PVGIS accepts the exact address, shading and actual orientation.
